1000 years of annoying the French - Books

I’ve just received an email from the writer Stephen Clarke (www.stephenclarkewriter.com) to remind me that his new book, 1000 years of annoying the French is now out.

Being typically modest, Stephen says that.. I’m not saying “it’s funny and informative and sort of cheerfully provocative, the perfect gift for yourself, your loved ones, your workmates and their pets.” but, knowing his other books, I’d say that it’s probably all of those things and more!

I’m certainly going to buy a copy myself and will let you know good it is.  I’ve only been living over here (and annoying the French) for seven years so I guess I could use some pointers!

More information

Was the Battle of Hastings a French victory?

No! William the Conqueror was Norman and hated the French.

Were the Brits really responsible for the death of Joan of Arc?

No! The French sentenced her to death for wearing trousers.

Was the guillotine a French invention?

No! It was invented in Yorkshire.

Ten centuries’ worth of French historical ‘facts’ bite the dust as Stephen Clarke looks at what has really been going on since 1066.

From his publisher….

Stephen Clarke lives in Paris, where he divides his time between writing and not writing.

His first novel, A Year in the Merde, originally became a word-of-mouth hit in 2004, and is now published all over the world.

Since then he has published three more bestselling Merde novels, as well as Talk to the Snail, an indispensable guide to understanding the French.

Research for Stephen’s novels has taken him all over France and America.

For 1000 Years of Annoying the French, he has also been breathing the chill air of ruined castles and deserted battlefields, leafing through dusty chronicles, brushing up the medieval French he studied at university and generally losing himself in the mists of history.

He has now returned to present-day Paris, and is doing his best to live the entente cordiale.

Haha! I’m a big fan of Mr ‘A Year in the Merde.’ Thanks for the tip!

It’s a good book – I’ve just finished reading it. I do wonder what his French friends/family think of it, though… It doesn’t do much for the French national reputation!
